Let the the gentle colors of nature color your life…

Our Shizuku Towel collection started with a single thought… “How could we harvest the beautiful pure colors of freshly grown vegetables and use them to dye our towels…” With our goal in mind, we set about this by combining our highly absorbent towels with local vegetables, in the hopes of bringing the gentle colors of nature into our customers lives.

Keeping nature’s color

Keeping nature’s color

Mizu Eggplant, Senshu onion, Matsunami cabbage, basil, all specialties of the Southern Osaka region, are first sorted from fruit, to skin and them to leaves, each color is carefully extracted to make the dye. In our unique technique of towel dyeing, we are able to preserve the original colors of the vegetables and keep the feel of nature without the fading.

Our products are free of bleaching agents, optical brighteners, and chemical softeners

Compared to conventional vegetation dyeing techniques, our dyes are highly durable and less likely to fade even after to continual use. As our dyes are resourced from nature, depending on the season and the environment of dyeing, the colors produced may differ subtly. Therefore, each of our products are unique and have a one of a kind feel, a difference we hope our customers enjoy.

From the essence of 5 Osaka vegetables, 7 towels were produced.

  • Water Eggplant
  • Senshu Onion
  • Ayahomare Carrot
  • Osaka Basil
  • Matsunami Cabbage

From the soil, cotton seeds germinate, bloom and bear fruit. This fruit then becomes the raw material forming the yarn that is eventually woven to create a towel. Although agriculture and those who produce the crops are vital to the process of towel making this is often overlooked. It is our hope that by using raw materials and vegetables as our dye we can convey a message of the care that comes from the farmers and is showcased through our products.

Reusing vegetables

Reusing vegetables

Following the production of delicious carrot juice, straight from Osaka’s local vegetables, the remaining pulp and byproduct, that was once discarded is now put to a new use. In addition, misshapen vegetables not suitable for sale and harvested leaves and basil are also utilized to make our dyes.

Multiple Dyes

From the fruit to the peel and even the skin, all of nature’s colors are extracted to make our dyes. By repeating the dyeing process several times we are able to achieve our deep hues while retaining the natural color of fresh vegetables that it comes from.

Vegetable color with new dyeing technology

Vegetable color with new dyeing technology

Through the use of new technology we are able to source the vegetables color and dye our towels from it. In the process we do not use any bleaching agents, optical brighteners, or softeners. Compared to conventional vegetation dyeing, which has a tendency to fade our colors are durable and maintain their color even after continues washing and prolonged usage.

A thin towel with premium water absorption

A thin towel with premium water absorption

The last stage of our process is to create a towel that is thin and easy-to-handle that is also highly absorbent. In order to achieve this, we weave towels that are light in nature and have a fine texture, such as our double gauze products. Our handkerchief towels display not only the rich vegetable color from which they were dyed but also are patterned with the vegetable itself!
